Blue Ridge Parkway Weather
Many areas of the Parkway are at high elevation where it is colder, windier, and often shadier than the surrounding communities. The Parkway is not plowed or salted, so these higher elevation sections may stay wet or icy, even when it is warm and sunny nearby. If nighttime temperatures freeze precipitation on the roadway or other unsafe travel conditions exist, that section of the Parkway will remain closed to vehicle traffic. Some sections of the Parkway, especially those with frequent tunnels, may remain closed for much of the winter season if temperatures continue to dip below freezing.
Some sections of the Parkway cannot be gated and closed, and visitors should exercise extreme caution when traveling in these areas during the winter. It is important to observe all signs and information posted on the NPS website. In certain severe circumstances, sections may be closed to all traffic – including hikers, bicyclists and skiers.
But closed sections of the Parkway often provide a wonderful winter playground- a great place to ski or snowshoe (when snow is on the ground), to walk a leashed dog, or even to ride your bike with no vehicles nearby (when weather conditions permit).
